Birmingham, England. Same as Ozzy.
How long have you guys been around and how do you account for your longevity?
For about 25 years. If I knew what it was, I would bottle it and sell it. I think one of the things is we were all friends before we were in a band together so maybe that's what it is.
Sometimes people are friends before they get into a band together and then once in they're in a band together, business gets into it and then they get all fucking pissed off at each other.
We've managed to balance it all out as well.
Is it all the same original people?
Except the drummer, yeah.
When was the last time you guys were in Texas?
We haven't been here since '99. We've mainly concentrated on the East and West coasts. It's good to be back.
You guys have been here for about a month?
We've got kids so we can only go out for like three weeks.
There are generations of kids in the punk scene which has been around for 30 years and they're still loving it. What do you attribute to the longevity of the punk scene?
The freedom of it. When we started out it was about rebellion against authority. I felt like I was doing something that my parents wouldn't approve of. I still do. We get teens and people of all ages at the shows. You get young kids and kids the same age as us. I still feel like I'm a kid. It's a lifestyle.
I think we're all kids. You never kind of outgrow that. How has the tour been so far?
Good so far. A couple of quiet places in the Midwest.
How many albums have you guys put out over the years?
Like 10 studio. There's also compilations and greatest hits. About 25 albums altogether and EPs.
Is Captain Oi reissuing a lot of that stuff?
Yeah, most of it.
One was mentioned that's really hard to come by.
Punk Junkies. We were signed to this German label that was sort of strange. They suddenly disappeared off the face of the earth so we gained the rights to the album and we gave Captain Oi permission to reissue it.
You guys just released a DVD. Is Captain Oi also releasing that?
No, it's a different company called Secret Films but it's not very good. The interviews and backstage stuff is good but the show itself isn't very good.
Are you guys working on a studio album?
Yeah, we're about three quarter's done with the writing.
When will people be able to get their hands on that?
When we record it. I don't know when that will be. Probably next year. We're thinking that it's July maybe. Maybe the end of this year but more than likely next year. We're not in a rush to do it.
You've been around 25 years and have 25 releases so that's not bad.
Punk rock all the time.
You made the comment that you still feel like you're doing something your parents wouldn't approve of. How do you relate the punk thing to your own kids?
I just tell them what's right and what's wrong. We try to tell them not to use drugs. To teach them the right things. But for them, it's all they've ever known. Daddy's in a band so they're quite nonchalant about it to their friends. I think they're secretly proud of us. They come to sound checks in Birmingham when we play shows. My oldest daughter is 14 so she's getting into going out to gigs on her own. We have to drop her off.
Do you warn her about stuff?
Yeah, yeah all the time. About boys.
Daddy's been down that road. Do you feel that you're a more responsible person now than you were when you started out?
I think so. You have to go down to get up again. I've done things in the past that I wouldn't do again and that's the learning curve. That's the kind of stuff that I warn my kids about.
Are you afraid that they may experiment with drugs or you think they won't do that?
I think they're pretty sensible.
I was like that as a kid. I never used any drugs because I saw other people do it and seeing how they stupid they got.
My 14 year old, some girl in her year at school got kicked out for selling pot. She wasn't very good at it. She'd stolen some of her older sister's and pretended to be a dealer.
When will you stop being in a band?
When I die. You're punk until you're dead.
Any other thoughts or comments?
It's nice to be back in Texas again. It's so hot.
