I am a California native. I have been playing keys since I was five. My first big break was with Alice Cooper in 1989.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
Van Halen, Ozzy, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck , Dixie Dregs.
What got you interested in pursuing a career in music and how did you get started?
I have always gravitated towards music since I was very young. Van Halen 1 came out when I was 12. From that point on, I wanted to play in a band.
Who all have you recorded with?
Alice Cooper, KISS, Dream Theater, and many sessions and guest appearances. You can see my detailed discography at Derek Sherinian.com.
What gear do you endorse and why?
I have been playing KORG synthesizers for seven years now. I just love their products, and they treat me very well.
You've played on many Dream Theater albums. Is this a band you particularly enjoy working with and are you a big fan of progessive rock?
I am a fan of great musicians, and playing with Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci opened me up to new musical areas that I would have not explored.
You mentioned that you toured with Alice Cooper. When did you tour with him and what he was like to work with?
I started with him in 1989, and played about 300 gigs with him. Alice is cool. The first tour with him was the most fun that I have ever had on tour.
You had also mentioned being on KISS' Revenge tour. Can you tell us a little about that?
Well...maybe the KISS tour was the most fun!!!!
You just got off tour with Yngwie Malmsteen. How was the tour and did you enjoy working with him?
Yngwie is the real deal. I am in awe of his talent, and he is fun to be around. I look forward to recording with him in the future.
Can you tell us about your band Planet X?
PLANET X is myself, Virgil Donati on drums, and Tony MAcAlpine on guitar. We are pure instrumental metal fusion. We are working on our newest CD, Moon Babies, which will be out in spring 2002.
I understand you recently released a CD called Inertia?
Inertia is my newest solo CD, featuring Simon Phillips, Steve Lukather, Zakk Wylde, among many other great players. Simon Phillips co-produced the CD with me. It was a great experience to be around such a seasoned cat.
Out of everyone you've worked with, who was your favorite and why?
Working with Simon Phillips was the pinnacle for me. Simon epitomizes musical excellence, and to be interfacing with guys like him and Steve Lukather, it just gives me a sense of validation that you just can't get anywhere else.
Is there anyone you haven't worked with yet that you would like to work with in the future?
Jeff Beck and Eddie Van Halen.
