Tell me a little bit about Emery.

We're spread out all over the place. Most of the band is originally from South Carolina and they moved out to Seattle a few years ago. That's where I'm from and I met the band there. That's where I joined and then we have a recently new drummer that's from Indianapolis. Our old drummer got married and quit about a year after we put out our first record. Our new drummer Dave is from Indianapolis so we have people living in South Carolina and me and a couple of the guys from Seattle and then our drummer in Indianapolis. It's all over the place as far as where we're from and stuff like that. It seems to work out right now anyway. For the first couple of years we were a band, we all lived together either in the same apartment or we lived for a year in the basement of a friend's house. We all slept in the same room on four different bunk beds. Saved up money to tour and stuff like that. That's just how we had to live because we wanted to tour and try to make the band successful so we sacrificed living conditions and food and stuff like that to be able to do that. Now that we're a little more successful and since we're touring so much, we're not really home so much anyway so it almost doesn't matter where we live at. We just get together a couple of weeks before any tour, practice for a little bit, and stuff like that.

So they decided to move back to South Carolina.

Yeah, yeah. Half of them moved back and then Dave was always living in Indianapolis.

How would you describe your music exactly?

I don't know. I guess it's hard to say. We just write music that we like and that also keeps us interested in it musically. You can say a lot of our songs, as opposed to a verse, chorus, verse type music, although we have that we try to write music that's more like different parts. It goes from one part to another part to another part into the end of the song. There's no really repeating sections in any songs. That's the kind of music we like. We've written a lot more verses. A few more than our last record. On this newer one where it's more verse, chorus, verse, it has a couple repeats of the same things. I don't know what it is. We're influenced by a lot of different bands like older emo bands and maybe we're a screamo band because we scream. We just write music that keeps us from being bored on stage and then hopefully other people like that I guess.

They come up with all sorts of labels like screamo. Post hardcore.

I don't know what we're called. We hope it's not boring is all. If people think we're not boring then we're doing what we're trying to be.

Heavy music isn't boring. At least not to me. Tell me a little bit about the new record you guys put out.

It was a different experience as far as recording it for us because our first record was a whole bunch of songs that we had written over a couple of years just being a band. We recorded that first record. With the newer record, we took five weeks off before we went into the studio. We just sat there and wrote it that one time. It was just different for us actually writing all the songs at once and trying to make songs we felt that would go well together. Also not trying to write things that all sounded the same was also difficult. Writing parts and then realizing that that sounds a lot like this and we've got to try to change this up. With the first record that wasn't a problem because the songs like "Walls" is a song that's almost four years old now. That's just a really, really old song. Whereas all this other stuff, there are a few songs on there that we have never even played live. We wrote them and then we went into the studio and recorded them. Even though we're playing a couple of those songs like one that we've never played live, we've played it now four times just in these last four shows. It's the first time we've ever played it. It was a different experience but we really enjoyed it. Doing it that way was really fun just because it was all really new to us. Getting in there and actually hearing it. All of the parts together being recorded for the first time and then the vocals. Whereas the older record, we knew what the songs sounded like. We recorded demos of all the songs and then all that stuff for a new record we had. It was really fun and then the guy that we recorded the new record with is really great to work with and it was just a really cool experience to do that.

What three songs on your new record do you feel best describes your band the most?

I don't know. That's different. This is hard to say. My favorite is "Listening To Freddy Mercury", "In A Lose, Lose Situation", and "Studying Politics". Those are my favorite songs on the record. "In A Lose, Lose Situation" and "Listening To Freddy Mercury" as far as musically, are more things that I guess you could say are traditional for us. The stuff where the parts really change. The first half of the song "Listening To Freddy Mercury" and the second half of the song are just totally different and then "In A Lose, Lose Situation" is basically a song that is four parts. These parts that go and then there's the one section that repeats a little bit and that was actually the oldest as far as songs on the record. The idea for that song is the oldest idea. We wrote that, main guitar and some of that drum idea, Devin came up with while our old drummer was still in the band. Then "Studying Politics" is something that when we sat down to write this record we were all listening to some poppier and dancier stuff at the time. We really wanted to write a song that would be something that you could dance and move your head up and down to. That's where the idea for that song came from and actually Toby came up with that kind of guitar rhythm. It's something that he really, really liked and we thought it had a good feel. I guess those three songs at least describe where we're at maybe now musically.

How is the tour going so far?

It's going really good. It's been really, really fun. We've toured with Anberlin before so we've been friends with them for a long time. The rest of the bands are all guys we know. One of the bands, The Classic Crime, is from Seattle and so we met them a few times just at shows and stuff. We don't really know them that well or any other bands really that well at all. We're going to know them a little bit and one of them is sitting right over here. I think it's going to be fun. All of the guys I've met are really cool and really nice so I think it's going to be a really fun tour. Especially after a week or a week and a half when we're all starting to get to know each other and hanging out. So far it's been really, really great and really fun.

How long is the tour for?

It's about six weeks total. It ends in Florida a long time from now. It's a six week tour that started three or four days ago. April 26 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Way down there.

Any other thoughts or comments?

I don't know. All these bands on tour with us have new records coming out and they're all really good. When you get a chance to hear them, pick up their record. Buy the new Felix Copa record when it comes out.
